Microsoft hasn’t actually announced the availability of SMS Relay for users in the Release Preview ring, but users who are running Windows 10 builds delivered as part of this channel started seeing it a couple of days ago. This means that testing and bug hunting have completed successfully until now and the feature only has one more milestone to reach before getting the go-ahead. Previously introduced to users who were enrolled in the Windows Insider program’s fast ring, SMS Relay has recently been promoted to the Release Preview ring, which is the last important step before public release. With SMS Relay, users are allowed to connect their Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile devices and synchronize text messages, while also being able to send SMS right from the desktop. One way to connect phones and PCs was a feature called “Messaging Everywhere,” which Microsoft discontinued earlier this year in order to replace it with a newer implementation baptized SMS Relay that makes a little bit more sense for the company’s plans.

The full list of changes can be found on the Windows Blog.Microsoft is working hard to bring Windows 10 devices in sync, so the majority of features that are currently available on PC are also offered to mobile phones, with the firm aiming to provide the same look, feel, and feature pack no matter the device and screen size.

Microsoft has also made improvements to Cortana, the Photo app, and storage settings - and added the ability to save offline maps. You can also search contacts in your call history in Phone. The Messaging app also supports animated GIFs and now has a useful search function. The latest Windows 10 Mobile build also brings deeper Skype integration through Messaging, Phone, and Skype video apps. If you have multiple Windows 10 PCs and you don’t want to receive missed call notifications on all of them, you’ll be pleased to know you can disable the feature on individual machines from within Cortana’s settings menu. Cortana will send the message via your smartphone, so it will appear no different to a regular message when it’s seen by the recipient. You can also send an SMS from your PC at any time by speaking or typing “text” into Cortana, as you would on your smartphone. You can then ignore the notification, or send a reply by SMS. If you have access to these two platforms - and you’re signed into the same Microsoft Account on both - then Cortana will begin to notify you of any calls you’ve missed on your Windows 10 Mobile device.

Users will also need to be running Windows 10 build 10565 or above. This functionality is baked into the latest Windows 10 Mobile preview (build 10572), which is rolling out now to Windows Insiders, Microsoft announced on the Windows Blog. The digital assistant will also be able to inform you of missed calls on your desktop. In an upcoming Windows 10 update, Microsoft is giving Cortana the ability to send text messages from your PC via your Windows 10 Mobile device.
